Close enough to the Northern part of Yorkshire with Richmond minutes away and the Reeth / Aysgarth / Leyburn loop only 30 minutes away. Two pubs literally within a two minute walk. The White Swan does good steaks / meals and the Angel is a homely local pub. Much to enjoy. Only a short drive from Scotch Corner so the A1(M) makes for a quicker journey to and from this part of the County Dr Budden (April 2019)
We really felt at home there and had everything we needed for a relaxing post Christmas break through into the new year. It is well equipped, it's clean and loads of space. Being dog friendly is a bonus too. We'll definitely book again. If anyone reading this decides to go there, don't miss out on the White Swan over the road. A lovely pub with great food and friendly staff and owner. Mrs Holmes (December 2018)
Warm welcome at the nearby ' Angel ' pub where generous helpings of excellent food are served. As the village of Gilling West lies on the road linking the A66 with Richmond there can be quite a lot of traffic passing the cottage for a short period in the early morning and late afternoon . Mr Wilson (December 2018)
The Angel pub was very friendly and welcoming and dog friendly. The walks in that area had a lot of historical interest Mr Collinson (October 2018)
It was an all-too-brief stay planned around a stupendous celebration meal at the White Swan, but the cottage exceeded our expectations. Heed the review comments about the cooker. It was a fiendish technological conundrum and only one of us managed to crack how to turn on the hobs. Max the dog really appreciated the dogs'-eye view from the lower landing window. There are no shops/garages in the village so have all necessaries with you when you arrive if you don't want to have to venture out again. All in all, can highly recommend Baker's Cottage, Gilling West and Richmond. All lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our Dales weekend. Mrs Mccormack (September 2018)
It would be helpful to have the availability of one lamp in the sitting room that provided brighter lighting . The instruction booklet for the cooker did not have any information on the use of the hot plates and without this the correct use of the icons to switch on the different plates was not at all user friendly. The water pressure in the hot tap in the bathroom is tremendous and if the pressure cannot be reduced a warning regarding this would be helpful . I have spoken to the owner about the latter two issues . Overall a delightful cottage and a most enjoyable stay. Mr Wilson (August 2018)
Very clean and in a great location. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it to everyone. Mrs Cooper (August 2018)
It is beautifully decorated & well equipped. It is In easy reach of other places to visit. It is In a charming, friendly village with 2 pubs close by both serving excellent food. Mrs Wakefield (August 2018)
Two pubs within minutes both with great food very welcoming. We would definitely highly recommend. Mr Farrow (June 2018)
On arrival any good impression was ruined by the weeds all round the front door. On opening the front door we were met with an horrendous smell. On investigation this was found to be several plug in air fresheners, which we promptly unplugged. After opening all the windows and doors the smell gradually went only to be replaced by a worse one. The whole house was impregnated with the cloying smell of fuel oil. It was so bad in the dinning room that we could not use it all week! The entire house was shabby and run down and far from clean. There were crumbs all over the dinning room table and cobwebs over kitchen. The floors were far from clean and I won’t even mention the bathroom especially behind the toilet! The off road parking space was frequently parked in, forcing me to park on the street on most occasions. The rear courtyard was really really small, totally unusable! It was again overgrown with weeds and the furniture covered in bird muck. It only ever got the sun in the morning so was totally unusable. Having a dog and a car the cottage was booked on the strength of its off road parking and outside space for my dog. Every time we came back to the cottage the fuel oil had built up. It was impossible to leave the rear door open to let fresh air in as two black cats from next door kept coming into the cottage. Front room. Using the DVD player caused the tv volume to go so low you could not here it. None of the dvds we tried worked they just kept sticking. Kitchen Could do with a freezer and instructions for the hob, it took us forever to work out how to use it Courtyard Apart from. Stairs Carpet threadbare. Bathroom Toilet seat hanging off. Really dirty! Whilst on the holiday we visited relatives who kept complaining of a strange smell when we were around. Mr Smith (June 2018)
We had a lovely quiet week and renewed our acquaintance with Yorkshire, mostly in the sunshine. The nearest shops are in Richmond, which is delightful if busy, and we particularly enjoyed the tour of the Georgian Theatre there. Nice little kitchen, although we hadn't realised that there was no freezer, not even an icebox, which meant some of the stores I had brought needed careful attention! We dinosaurs were quite flummoxed on cooking the first meal by the controls for the ceramic hob which were unfamiliar to us, and although there were lots of instructions for equipment, we could find none for the hob. The tiny yard outside is not particularly suitable for sitting out in, as there are other people living at the back of the cottage. Otherwise the cottage is fine for two, but I would think a bit small and under-equipped for four. Comfortable bed, nice deep bath but shower quite fiddly, and water temperature sometimes difficult to regulate, plenty of storage space. Excellent Wifi, no mobile phone signal but you can use the landline for urgent calls. Friendly staff at The Angel, where we had a delicious home-cooked meal one evening. Mrs Finch (May 2018)
Close to plenty of lovely places to visit. White Swan across the road very popular and meals very good.Bit further afield The Shoulder of Mutton at Middleton Tyas is well worth a visit. Cottage was very comfortable and very good size...amazing bathroom and huge double bedroom which would easily accommodate a travel cot. We were very lucky with the weather, but I imagine that the place would be lovely on a cold winters evening too...very cozy! Would definitely recommend and return again. Mrs Williamson (May 2018)
We would certainly use it again Ideally placed to explore the Dales and surrounding district. Beamish Museum only one hour away One small grumble. The saucepans (too thin on the bottoms)and frying pan (a bit worn) were not very good. In fact we went out and bought our own frying pan Mr Croft (March 2018)
..cottage was lovely. The White Swan Public House in the village was a perfect location for great meals and staff were very welcoming. Mrs Williams (June 2017)
Cottage was Beautifull ,very clean . Extremely well equipped . Location great .will defiantly book to come back to it Mrs Regan (December 2016)
