Cheddar Gorge - explore the cliffs and caves. And find a holiday park or cottage nearby

Cheddar Gorge is a vast set of caves and cliffs in the south west county of Somerset. A visit to
the caves in Cheddar Gorge will mean buying a ticket, and with a ticket for a family of four at
about £50, it isn't necessarily a cheap day out. You also have to think about parking - now,
if you get to Cheddar Gorge really in the day, you can park at the first car park, and this is free of
charge as long as you pay to get into the caves. However, this car park will only hold about 100 cars - so
soon fills up. We rolled in just after 10am, and the "free" car park was already full; so we had to park a little further
up the road, and pay £5 for the day.

The caves are worth a look round; it takes about an hour to go through the caves, and our 7 year-old, and 11 year-old
were kept quite happy. You get supplied an "audio guide" (one of those things which looks like a 1980s
mobile phone) which will give you a running commentary on what you're looking at.
You don't have to pay to see Cheddar Gorge
If you're thinking "I don't fancy paying a kings ransom to see Cheddar Gorge", you can still have
a good day out without spending a fortune. There is a round trip walk which takes you up thw 271 steps
of "Jacob's Ladder", along the top of the cliff top, down to ground level, and back up the otherside
of the gorge, which then takes you back to the main Cheddar road where the shops and car parks are.
This walk is about 2 miles long and takes about 3 hours to complete - and here's the rub; it's free. Yep,
you can expereinece the views of Cheddar Gorge without spending any money at all.
Cheddar Gorge does make a lovely day out, and both our kids really enjoyed their time here. But
like most attractions; it does cost!

We stayed at Spindlewood Lodges, which is a lovely
