The villa was lovely but the road to access is was very rough so getting to and from the tarmac road took 10 minutes so popping to the shops for a pint of milk was hard work . the sun didn’t shine all the time so the pool was quite cold being unheated. My husband swam everyday but myself and my daughters only briefly as it was too cold. The location of the villa was beautiful and if you want to get away completely it will be ideal. Nicole from Finchingfield (05 September 2018)
This is a beautiful villa in a stunning area of tuscany. We enjoyed spending time in the fabulous outdoor area, comprising pool, terrace, garden and bbq area. However, on the downside there was no phone signal in the area - we feel this should have been mentioned in the villa description. Overall, a fabulous villa from which a family can explore tuscany. Esther from London (29 August 2018)
The villa was nice and we had a lovely stay. My main issue was the internet connection- the villa was advertised as having internet connection but in reality did not have anything approaching a proper connection. The most you could do. Was send whatsapp messages, and very occasional (ie every few days) manage to get into facebook. Last year we rented a villa with tui and they had a clear standard for internet connection- ie if it wasn’t good enough they would not advertise the. Property as having it. I had assumed the same would be of james villas but sadly not. This made a real impact on our holiday as our kids had no internet access and also we were essentially cut off as theee was no phone connection either. - this scared me at night as we would have no means of raising the. Alarm if anything happened. The owner provided a list of emergency numbers and an internal alarm system but these would not have helped us in an emergency!. please can you advise. Me how you determine whether a property has internet access?. (the villa info also said please us the internet moderately otherwise future people may not have access which made me think perhaps the lack of access was something to do with the tariff being paid) Rachel from London (22 August 2018)
A sizable property in a quite rural setting. Large and well equipped villa. Good levels of cleanliness. Access is difficult with a two mile drive down an unmade track with sharp corners and steep inclines. A 4x4 is really needed to access this villa comfortably. The pool was less than the 1.5 metres deep as described. Richard from Woking (08 August 2018)
Spacious, clean and comfortable with a friendly owner available if needed Andrew from Suffolk (25 July 2018)
Lovely villa but be ready for the long bumpy access road. Recommend a 4x4 car. Perfect retreat if you want to get away from everything, we had a great week here. Ian from Durham (11 July 2018)
The villa has everything you need - it doesn't have a/c but that doesn't matter when you reach the villa you understand that having wi-fi/tv & electricity is an amazing achievement. Pool is a good size, rooms are well decorated and all the amenities work fine. . . my only criticism is the lack of warning about the access road to the villa - its described as a dirt track on the directions. Rally cars would have a fun time on this road. You need to approach with caution, stay in 2nd gear or less and your speed should never exceed 20. If you succumb to the very large ditch's you will need help (mine came in the form of a local farmer and his tractor when I got abit too close to the edge). so a big tip is to visit a supermarket (the large coop in volterra is well signposted, ignore the small often closed corner shop) before you get there. Doesn't matter how packed you car is, get the essentials to save you the extra trip out if your first experience of the road proved too much fun. . brilliant experience, beautiful part of the world, amazing villa and a magically holiday Paul from Southport (04 July 2018)
This was a beautiful villa, lovingly decorated. The pool was very clean, if a little shallow. The only 'down' part of this holiday were the instructions how to find the villa, which lead you to believe was 300 metres off a dirt track, having left the road. In reality it was almost three miles on a dirt track (or chippings covered road) before finding the dirt track. Also we hired a small fiet pander. Have we know in advance the steep terrain we probably would have hired a four by four car. The panda only just making the steep hill in first gear..that said this was a fantastic villa and holiday we really enjoyed, the scenery and local towns being fabulous. Jeff and cat John from Cardiff (27 June 2018)
The villa was beautiful set in a quiet and peaceful location perfect for getting away from it all. a car is needed is get around for grocery shopping and to visit larger towns. our host was very helpful and accommodating and even waited for us when our flight was delayed and we got lost trying to get to the villa. Clare from London (06 June 2018)
Lovely villa and idyllic surrounding. A little bit remote for some and we would definitely recommend a 4x4 to drive from the main road, although we did manage very well with the fiat panda. Although the owner had problems with 'beavers' which we have since discovered are in fact coypu, getting into the pool, she attended every morning to clean/disinfect and did offer us the opportunity to move to her other villa. We were happy to stay put as the pool was a little too cold to swim in this time of year, and were very happy with everything. Highly recommend. Jeanne from West Sussex (13 September 2017)
The villa was probably the best we have had. the decor is lovely, well equipped and very comfortable. the pool isn't very deep which disappointed the children that they couldn't dive in but it gave us peace of mind! the garden is beautiful, surrounded by farmland and is a real retreat. the track to it is long and steep and a 4x4 would be preferable but once you get used to it it is fine. Roger from Inverness (26 July 2017)
We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely come back. The villa was great and very clean, had all we need. The pool and view were fantastic, along with the outdoor terrace. Had a very relaxing stay and enjoyed what was in the area, volterra and san gimignano. The drive down the track puts you in the beautiful tuscan hills and is very private. Loved it all! Hannah from Norwich (28 June 2017)
Very nice villa with excellent owner. Sam (31 May 2017)
Beautiful villa, out in the countryside - no near neighbours. Access from the main road is a fifteen minute drive down a very twisty gravel track. The scenic drive is well worth it though and the villa itself is great with a wonderful and extensive garden and lovely poolside area, all beautifully maintained by the owners. The pool itself is pretty basic, all one depth and very cold (we were there in may). it gets the sun all day though and I am sure it will be warmer in months where the sun is higher and hotter. Inside, the villa is cool and comfortable and well equipped, plenty of places for eating inside and out. We had a great time and there are so many amazing places to visit in the area. David from Troon (17 May 2017)
This was our first visit to tuscany and also italy, the villa was outstanding so quite and peaceful, the pool was great. Anyone going there should be aware that the villa is located down unmade roads (10 minutes from the main road), suitable vehicle hire is needed, we had an renault scenic which was ok, be sure not too have a low car. If you have young people in your group make sure you take some dvd,s with you as the wifi is really slow and the tv is limited. The town of volterra is near and well worth a visit. Alan from Canvey Island (01 October 2016)
I think this is the best villa we have stayed in; it's very private villa in a peaceful, rural location - well worth the drive along the dirt track from the main road. The inside space was very comfortable and well equipped for a relaxing holiday. The covered terrace with table and chairs and a seating area was a real bonus - we could still be outside even when the sun was too hot or it was raining. The pool was great and was cleaned every day, there was even a couple of airbeds for use in the pool. The owner, nicoletta, was absolutely lovely and helpful; when the dvd did not work it was replaced the next day. We would certainly love to go back to podere la palla. Philip from Carshalton (24 September 2016)
Poggio alla palla is a beautifully renovated villa in a very private position about 20 mins from volterra. It had everything we needed for a relaxing 2 week stay - pool, table tennis, space to read & play games, dvd player and wifi. The owner was very helpful and kept the pool and garden looking lovely during our stay. It is a bit of a hike off the main road - 10 minutes of driving on a very uneven, unmade road - so if you can get a 4x4 vehicle then this would make the drive easier. however, the privacy and the views this gives you is well worth it. Ann from Winchester (06 August 2016)
Beautiful, peaceful villa in rural location. Villa spotlessly clean, large, cool inside and very well laid out with great decor. By far and away the best villa I have ever rented. The owners are friendly and unobtrusive. . the surrounding hills are great for walking with varied wildlife. Volterra is easily accessible (25 mins or so) - as is siena for a longer day trip. The 4.5km track to the villa is also fun to drive. During our visit (july 2016) the moon was bright in the night sky and it was possible to see across the hills at midnight. The only minor complaint would be the pool temperature. It was just that little bit too cold. This was not mentioned to the owners though - everything else was perfect. Highly recommended. George from Towcester (23 July 2016)
Quite simply an idyllic rural location and a beautiful villa with fabulous owners who make you feel very welcome. We will return to this beautiful part of tuscany. Neil (17 July 2016)
A beautiful villa and a very thoughtful owner! we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Chris from West Yorkshire (02 July 2016)
A beautiful villa in the countryside. The pool and gardens were lovely and maintained regularly during our stay. Everything we could possibly need was provided along with a great welcome pack. It was, however, in the lower part of a valley, so we lost the sun a bit early. People booking should also be aware that this villa is reached by a very poor road that is 4km off the main road in volterra, it takes 15 mins to drive along due to the condition of this road. . all in all a very lovely relaxing week in a beautiful villa. Julie from Swepstone (28 May 2016)
An excellent villa with everything we could have asked for. the owner was amazing and looked after us brilliantly (also very discrete so we had privacy). worth noting there is no mobile phone signal at the villa which is extremely isolated. David from Blackpool (26 September 2015)
Podere la palla is a beautifully decorated, spacious villa in a peaceful rural location. Having our own pool with fantastic views was a much appreciated luxury and was perfect for cooling off after visiting the sights of sienna & pisa. We loved volterra which is a short drive away and san gimignano both full of character with some lovely restaurants. My favourite memories are waking up with the sunrise to the sound of birds singing and swims before breakfast, we had a wonderful relaxing holiday. Karen from Falkirk (18 July 2015)
This is a lovely villa that has every facility both inside and outside of the property. There were screens on all the windows and doors to help keep the insects out!. the setting is very private and the pool is very well maintained by the owners. In fact it is the nicest villa that we have stayed in!. this is a very rural property which may not suit everyone but once you get there it is beautiful. We wondered if the living room could do with more seating? apart from that it was brilliant! Hazel from Carlisle (04 July 2015)
