A lovely, well-equipped house spoilt by being not aired and therefore very damp when we arrived. The floors were also very dusty and the kitchen cupboards musty. It took the best part of a week to fully air the 2 downstairs bedrooms so it was fortunate there were only 2 of us for the first week and we used the upstairs bedroom. However, when our third guest arrived she discovered the bed was still damp and we had to put the mattress and bedding out in the sunshine - fortunately the weather had improved by then. It's really not good enough to encounter this lack of preparation and in our experience it's unusual to encounter these basic problems from a james villa. Alan from Kenley (23 June 2018)
The owner was incredibly rude and un-helpful the whole was spoilt because of this I would avoid and use another villla Patricia (02 June 2018)
Great villa, in an ideal location for what we wanted from a holiday. It needs to be appreciated that this is not a 'resort' location and the local facilities reflect the same. Better info within the villa regarding housekeeping and departure arrangements might overcome any language barriers. Great base for exploring the (wild?) atlantic coast of this part of the iberian peninsular as well as the inland areas of the river valleys and the uplands of the serra de arga if you are inclined to walking and rambling. Please note wifi was available by the time we were staying. Neil from Cambridge (16 September 2017)
We had a lovely holiday in casa do piao. The photos really don't do the villa and the grounds justice. The garden is really beautiful with orange and lime trees, the grape vine that covers the terrace is stunning. The villa itself is full of character and well equipped. The place was spotless when we arrived and the pool was cleaned and towels and sheets changed mid week. The lane to get to the villa is very narrow and it wouldn't be possible to get a large vehicle into the parking space within the villa walls. We rented a small family car and we could manage it with a bit of hand waving. There is a lovely restaurant a short walk from the villa and the nearest beach is 15/20 mins walk. Afife beach is beautiful and quiet but the sea can be pretty rough. The next beach on in ancora is just a 15 minutes drive away past the larger supermarket and is more sheltered. There's a small supermarket 5 minutes walk from the villa near afife station. We took day trips to caminha and porto. Caminha is a very quaint market town a short drive away and is well worth a trip. Porto was spectacular. My only reservation about the villa was the difficulties we had communicating with the housekeeper who was due to let us in on the first day and check us out on the last. We don't have any portuguese and when we called the number as instructed from the airport we had no idea whether we had got through to the right person, whether they were expecting us and at what time. This created a bit of stress but it all worked out in the end. I wonder whether communicating via text msg might be better so that the time of arrival etc. Could be agreed by both sides! A lovely villa in a very peaceful location. Nicely fitted out. Beautiful garden. We had a very enjoyable holiday here and hope to go back some time. Stephen from Nr Lewes, Sussex (24 June 2017)
Absolutely beautiful villa in a wonderful setting. Excellently equipped and spotlessly clean. we couldn't make the tv work (might have been user error) and another pillow for the master bedroom would have earned it 10/10 but these were very minor problems. We would highly recommend this villa. The pool and gardens were also fabulous. Alan from Milton Keynes (03 June 2017)
I was shocked at how big and private the villa was, I totally relaxed there, it would have been nice to be able to speak to someone in english, as the only problem I had I could not get through to the owner, and the lady who cleans and looks after the villa didn't speak any english. But I loved being there, a lovely restaurant around the corner served first class food, I wish I had found the more commercial beach, one town north, left at the first roundabout, a little sooner as the beach opposite the villa was a a bit wild with nowhere to hire a brolly to keep out of the sun when required. Russell from Affife (13 August 2016)
The casa do piao was everything we could have asked for and more from a villa! it was plentiful in character with its beautiful courtyard and gardens and the rooms were of a good size and boasted more than sufficient storage! before our visit we were hoping for a comfortably sized pool away from prying eyes and to our delight the pool didn't disappoint! it is indeed of a good size and the decking and sun beds provided a relaxing feel. The villa does have off street parking which was extremely convenient but as we were made aware before the trip there is a narrow road leading up to the villa but for the size of car we rented it wasn't a problem! the villa is well located near to a fantastic beach, intermarche and the local town caminha is well worth a visit too! the villa's appliances and extras we're of a good quality and the bbq was well used by us. The garden's patio table and chairs provided a lovely platform for alfresco dining each evening. We throughly enjoyed our trip and wouldn't hesitate at returning to the casa do piao which proved to a fantastic holiday villa which exhumed character! Brett from Brighton (30 July 2016)
A fantastic villa, very private grounds with secure off road parking and great house/grounds keepers. Visitors need to note the extremely narrow roads to get to the villa so please make sure you hire nothing larger than an average estate car! pool can be a bit chilly as its not heated at all and the grounds/house keepers speak no english so make sure to take your phrasebook. . the surrounding area is extremely quiet with one cafe in the village, no night life so tranquil and relaxing is the key to a stay at this villa. A beautiful beach within walking distance and stunning views. . for a peaceful holiday and work de-stress I would def go back to this villa, however if nightlife etc is what you are looking for then head further up the coast. Rebecca from Newport (01 August 2015)
Small niggles with the villa,. 1. Very small kettle and coffee pot - we were 5 adults so kettle had to be boiled several times for breakfast, and the automatic switch off did not work. 2. Musty smells in some rooms particularly the bedrooms- I think possibly first visitors this year and therefore needed a good airing . 3. Not sure about the cleanliness of the pool a lady came the first day but we didn't see anyone else so looked after it ourselves. 4. Would have liked a change of linen midweek as it was warm and plastic bed covering meant a change would have been appreciated. . 5. We had no idea that the area was as hilly as it was with narrow cobbled streets which meant we couldn't get the car to the villa as explained on arrival by the portuguese lady ( who spoke no english) that found us slightly lost in the village. Many notes had been made in the comments book about this with visitors leaving their cars by the supermarket a good 5 minute walk away. . 6. There was a lack of local information supplied about the area. 7. The wood burner in the kitchen had not been cleaned or emptied. . however, we had a lovely week with superb weather and loved northern portugal and the locals were extremely friendly and trying the language was good fun. Outdoor area with mature vine etc. Is great Andrew (16 August 2014)
It's a fab villa, with loads of space, very quiet and close to a decent restaurant and supermarket. Christopher from Bury St Edmunds (26 July 2014)
