Lovely villa if a bit basic and great swimming pool. Road to villa horrendous- dirt track that took 10 minutes to negotiate. Carolyn from London (02 September 2017)
The villa is well proportioned and well presented. the pool is excellent. . it is located down a road that is tarmacked at the start but becomes a rocky road that, whilst not difficult to drive, will add significant time to any journey. . . the kitchen is small. . if you want to get away from it all, the villa is an excellent choice. it is not located near any major towns so you will need to travel, but there are plenty of good places to go within an hours drive. Mathew from Sutton Coldfield (09 August 2017)
A perfect villa, in a wonderful quiet and secluded location. Waking up to a fantastic view of the medieval village of monteverdi marrittimo each morning was a real treat for the senses. The drive from the airport whilst long only added to the anticipation and excitement attributed to starting a fantastic holiday. It's well worth stopping at the coop in donoratico on the way there, picking up provisions to see you through the following day. On arrival at balconaio, take a sharp exhale of breath and with that allow all your troubles to flow away. This is truly a villa which will allow you to slow down your pace, find inner peace and reconnect with yourself leaving all the daily troubles of life behind you. The seclusion is something to behold and take advantage of - an opportunity to make your own little world. We'll be back. Barry (19 July 2017)
We've just got back from an amazing week here. If you love nature and being in the middle of nowhere then this place is perfect. We saw an abundance of wildlife, snakes, wild boar, deer and there were so many lizards in the grounds. Every evening the geckos would come out and keep us company, george, gertrude, geoffrey, grant, grace and graham (our 2 year old named them) were regulars. The pool was a little cold at the start of the week but as the temperatures increased so did the pool (thankfully) and we spent a lot of time in and around it. The inside of the villa was adequate with 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. But it was the outside area that was our favourite part. 3 seating areas to take advantage of we'd move around depending on the time of day. The grounds are a little scorched and do not walk on the grass with bare feet as there are little prickly things that stick in your feet, our son found out the hard way. Luckily mummy had tweezers on hand!! the nearest shop we found was a coop in castagneto carducci about 20 minutes away. There's so much to see and do it really was an amazing holiday. The villa is about a mile down a dirt track, some of which is tarmacked but some is just rubble and a bit hard going on the poor hire cars! balconaio is the last one so very private. Directions were spot on and the welcome pack was the best we've ever had. Would go back in a heart beat. Adrian from Ipswich (14 June 2017)
This is a lovely secluded villa. The decor is traditional/old, as are all the fixtures and fittings. That said they are all adequate. The beds are poor with uncomfortable matresses but ok. The pool is just right with depth ranging from .5m to 1m. . but there is a major down side. This villa is very secluded. What that means is it is at the top of a winding hill with hairpin bends every 50 yards so the top speed you can do is 20mph. It takes around 30 mins to get from the nearest major town to the villa, which is lovely first time but gets tedious if you do it frequently. . . the directions to the villa are poor. It took us 50mins to find it once we got to the top of the hill. In the end we had to use the gps longitude and latitude to find it as it's not on maps. It would really help if you got a street view picture in the instructions. ive added a streetview link to help others. Just paste into your browser. . http://maps.google.com/maps?layer=c&panoid=brcterzrkwwsbfwg5ftbqg&cbp=1%2c198.28642%2c%2c3.0%2c17.890305 . . the turning is between roadside markers 17/6 and 17/7. They are in roman numerals so it's 17/vi and 17/vii. It's a slight uphill tarmac drive with a four or five brown hand written signs for each of the villa and a couple of red post boxes. There are lots of these along the road so look out for the one with the name of the villa on it. . once you find the road, it's 1800m down a track. The first part is tarmac but then the second half is an unmade road with many rocks and potholes. I had a 4x4 so not a problem for me but if you have a car with skirts or low suspension this will be a big problem for you. It took us 6 mins to drive the track at 5mph in a 4x4. . so all that aside once you get there this is a very secluded location. It's the last house on the track so you get no passing traffic and only the occasional walker. We went in early june and only saw 3 people in 7 days. it's a bit like being in your own private world. So if privacy is what you are looking for pack a hamper of provisions and lock yourself away in this beautiful location for total seclusion. . despite the road and the track and the average beds we still loved it which will tell you a lot about just how nice this location is. Andrew from Maidstone (07 June 2017)
If you are looking for a rural location then look no further, this villa is for you. we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were particularly pleased that this villa is the last on the track. . the directions could do with a little more detail for the last 6 miles or so. it would also be of benefit to have details/directions to the nearest supermarket. Andrew (21 September 2016)
The villa was comfortable and clean with somewhat basic furnishings and felt a bit disjointed with the arrangement of the seating areas. the pool couldn't be faulted but the grounds did need some attention. the biggest problem was the road to the villa. calling it a dirt track was an understatement. It was more like a rocky road and took nearly 10 minutes to travel less than a mile. this made a trip anywhere a major excursion. The local roads are also very rural and mountainous but worth the effort for many of the beautiful towns in the area. Theresa from Birchington (08 September 2016)
Very remote and secluded (it is a mile from the road) but lovely for this. the pool and sun deck are great as are the outside seating areas - there are two to take advantage of the morning and afternoon sun. the furnishings are rustic but sufficient (just). the satellite tv could do with more english channels but the wifi was strong and stable. the bathrooms were clean but lacked soap and a decent amount of toilet paper. the kitchen was again small but had all the appliances required it would benefit from having things like salt, pepper and other basic 'cupboard' essentials. some information about the local area would have been very useful. Joseph from Croydon (17 August 2016)
This is a lovely villa with a great pool, a fantastic location with fine views all round. Be prepared, this villa is far off the beaten track and if you just want to relax with p&q, absolutely perfect - stock up and chill out! however, some fine locations around to explore too and a fine beach not too far away. If you do not like driving post dusk, then eating out options are limited Marc from Reading (29 June 2016)
Very difficult place to find especially at night. Used their socket to charge my phone on arrival only for the electric to trip.with no electric in the dark not knowing where the electric box was very unnerving.the fault was their plug took it apart found the earth was touching the live. Water was not hot just tepid. Suzanne (22 June 2016)
The setting for this villa is deep countryside so you need to like a quiet, peaceful setting. My only criticism of the villa itself was the comfort of the living room. The lighting was poor and the settee didn't face the television. Overall it was quite uncomfortable. Other than that our stay was just what the doctor ordered. The pool is the biggest we have encountered in five years - very good. . my only other criticism would be the instructions to get there. the last five or six miles were very hit and miss and really need to be rewritten. Richard from Wisbech (01 July 2015)
Before setting out, I read reviews that warned of the length and condition of the lane leading to villa balconaio. They were true; this is the only down-side to this accommodation. We were there at the beginning of may but the weather was warm enough to make the pool useful. The villa was cool at night; we could have, and should have, arranged for some heating. The roads in the area are windy and hilly so, for example, siena which is only 60 miles away is over two hours drive. This is not a problem as there are so many other beautiful, interesting places to visit that are much closer, such as suvereto, massa marittima, volterra and, of course, castagneto carducci and monteverdi marittimo. Michael from Fareham (06 May 2015)
Beautiful surroundings. the pool was a good size. Kevin (10 September 2014)
Excellent location. Excellent pool for the children. Third visit to this villa and would definitely come again. Air conditioning would make this villa perfect! Mr Thorp from Chester (23 July 2014)
The villa was wonderful, quiet and well appointed. The only thing which would have improved it was air-conditioning - it was 30 degrees inside and the two bedroom fans helped but could not cool it down. Otherwise all was great. In this particular villa, the living room was accessible from outside which was a bit strange, but otherwise very comfortable. Mrs Osman from Bedford (August 2011)
Lovely villa in a very quiet place, about 1 mile (1.4 km) down an extremely rocky rough track, you couldn't really call it a road, which was fine as long as we took it carefully in the hire car. About 10 minutes drive from the little village Monteverdi Marittimo which had a couple of places to eat, or 30 minutes from Castagneto Carducci which is a bigger town and has a Co-op. The pool was excellent, an L-shaped pool with enough shallow area for young children. An inflatable boat and other pool toys were provided. Someone came to clean the pool and to water the garden during our stay. Mrs Osman from Bedford (August 2011)
superb location, superb villa, helpful rep. Mr Brown from Little Smeaton (June 2011)
excellent break. So relaxing. Would advice anyone to attend here. Dr Thorp from St. Helens (June 2008)
Altogether an excellent holiday package that was thoroughly enjoyed by all four of us. For perfection all that would have been required was for the pool to have been heated, and a four wheel drive vehicle for the track up to the main road (the VW Passat we hired, consistently groung its underside on the very rough track from villa to the road. Mr Erskine from Denny (October 2007)
