You're probably here because you're looking for a Portland Holiday in 2013 - well, Portland Holidays have become part of
Thomson Holidays now. In fact,
Portland Holidays has been owned by Thomson for several years, but since 2011 the Portland brand has been stopped, and all holidays
are now sold through Thomson. All's not lost though - it's still worth having a look at Thomson to see what they can offer you in the
way of a good deal.
Stunning white sand beaches, offshore reefs teeming with exotic fish and corals,
warm seas and cool sands - what more could you ask for from a holiday resort?
Add intriguing, ancient Mayan ruins to explore on your day off from the beach,
and vibrant local culture and it's no surprise that Mexico's Caribbean Coast has
flourished as a favourite holiday destination.
Mexico has something for everyone and its resorts are quite diverse. Widely known
as the largest and most popular resort, Cancun has a strong American influence.
Riviera Maya on the other hand, is separate to Cancun and has a large expanse of a
long, sandy beach. Cancun's magnificent coastline is warmly embraced by the
translucent waters of the Caribbean sea. A big, modern, purposebuilt resort, Cancun
lies on a thin, flat island, connected by causeways to the mainland. On the Caribbean
side, there is a beautiful, sandy white beach and on the other a lagoon. In between
runs a 12-mile rank of smart hotels.
Food & Wine in Mexico
Most tastes will be satisfied in the Yucatan. Cancun and Playa del Carmen have plenty
of burger bars and Western food outlets to keep the kids happy. However it would be a
shame not to give the local food a try. The staples that you find at your local Mexican
are all here - fajitas and quesadillas will be served with refried beans, rice and the
ubiquitous chilli sauce. For breakfast, enjoy fresh fruit with natural yogurt for a
delicious and healthy start to the day. When night comes tuck into the local beer,
such as 'Corona', and then move onto the tequila if you dare.
Days & Nights in Mexico
The large resorts have discos and bars to cater for the Western ear and stay open
until the early hours. Alternatively, watch the world go by in a pavement cafe as
the sun sets and enjoy the Mexican tradition of tequila.
Sights & Sounds in Mexico
Sightseeing: There is still evidence today of the Mayan civilization that once
dominated this idyllic part of Mexico. Visit the truly spectacular ruined city
at Chichen Itza which rises up out of the bush and scrub land like the edifices
of the Lost World. It would not be right to visit Mexico without taking in these
awe-inspiring ruins, the most famous and complete of all Mayan sites.
Sun & Sand in Mexico
There are plenty of fine beaches along this coast. Cancun is the most famous and
offers typically luxurious Caribbean scenes. Beach life here is all about having
fun and there are a plethora of water sports available. Down the coast are the
less refined but more secluded beaches of Xpu-Ha, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
It's well worth making time to go to Isla de Mujeres where you'll find the idyllic
North Beach - a perfect picture of what a Caribbean beach should be, replete with
silky soft white sands, palm trees and azure, translucent waters.
