Haven Holiday Parks in Wales - Self Catering Family Holiday Parks

Haven Holiday | Family self catering holidays and short breaks Find out more about Haven Holidays and Breaks, including prices and availability.

Surfing, Canoeing, Windsurfing

Welsh surfers have always been amongst of the best in the Europe - with surfable coastline on three sides of the country that’s not too surprising. There are heaps of great beaches on which to get to grips with the waves, from Llangennith and Newgale in the south to Hell’s Mouth and Whistling Sands in the north, and most good breaks have surf schools close by.

Windsurfers too will find excellent conditions all around Wales. Former European Wavesailing Champion Tristan Boxford honed his skills off the Gower coast, and considers that “the potential for great windsurfing spots is endless”. And Wales is also at the forefront of the hot new sport of kitesurfing, with top location Rhosneigr on Anglesey the home of 2002 national champion Alex Tritten and the venue for major contests.

Beneath the waves you’ll find some of the best diving and snorkelling in Britain, especially around Pembrokeshire where the Marine Nature Reserve of Skomer Island is a major attraction for divers.

Back up and surfacing, check out the fantastic options for kayaking – some of the finest sea kayaking in Europe lies off the coasts of North Wales and Pembrokeshire, and there’s wild white water action on rivers like the Tryweryn and Dee which are also good spots for rafting.

If you want something less frenetic, how about a relaxing day of open canoeing on the smooth flowing lower reaches of rivers such as the Wye and Teifi or Llyn Gwynant in North Wales?

Rock Climbing

Wales has some of the best rock climbing on the planet – ask rockstar Leo Houlding, who climbs some of the most extreme routes in the world but is “always drawn back to Wales”.

People have been testing themselves on Welsh crags since the sport of climbing began in the 19th century – in fact Wales can lay claim to being one of its birthplaces – and there are just as many challenges today as when Everest hero George Mallory scaled the peaks of North Wales in the early 1900s.

The mountains of Snowdonia and Mid-Wales and the sea cliffs of North Wales, Pembrokeshire and the Gower between them provide unsurpassable rock climbing, abseiling and coasteering, and if you want to head underground then the caving opportunities are also world class – Ogof Draenen in South Wales is one of the world’s top caving sites with over 65 kms of passages.

Paragliding

Ask any experienced paraglider pilot and they’ll tell you that Wales and the Welsh Borders are the place to take to the skies in Britain. Not only are they ideal locations for learning, once you’ve got your technique sussed you’ll be able to soar through the air for a hundred kilometres or more enjoying fantastic views of the green hills and rocky mountains of Wales.

Mountain Biking

The best mountain biking in the world is to be found in Wales – and that’s official. The Colorado-based International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) recently declared that the country’s selection of Forestry Commission mountain biking centres offer ‘…some of the best new trail in the world … something for every rider’.

Elsewhere, the towns of Llanwrtyd Wells and Machynlleth also have purpose built routes spiralling out from them, and if you’d rather head off into the backcountry, the wilds of places such as Mid-Wales and Snowdonia have endless miles of trails to discover.
