Haven Holiday | Family self catering holidays and short breaks Find out more about Haven Holidays and Breaks, including prices and availability.

Dorset is almost entirely designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covering over 400 square miles. It includes Sherborne to the north, Dorchester to the east and Lyme Regis to the west with glorious coast and countryside in-between. Here you will find woodlands strewn with bluebells and all kinds of flora throughout the year. Such a varied landscape means it’s rich in wildlife too, providing a haven for rabbits, hares, foxes, deer, squirrels and much more. On Golden Cap and Powerstock Common Nature Reserve you will find an excellent variety of butterflies.

It’s a bird watchers paradise too with over 360 species of birds having been recorded in Dorset!

The miles upon miles of open countryside and green rolling hills, hide more than 150 villages, all waiting to be discovered. Explore them by foot, on horseback, or by car. A leisurely cycle ride is the best way to get around West Dorset’s quiet country lanes. Our cycling page will give you more details. By bicycle you can take advantage of the many beautiful picnic spots and spectacular viewpoints!

Pilsdon Penn is the highest point in Dorset and rewards its conqueror with some amazing views. The Cerne Valley, home to the famous Cerne Giant is definately worth exploring, as is the Brit Valley and the Brit Valley Way walking trail.

For details of guided countryside walks in West Dorset, contact one of our Tourist Information Centres. They stock many self-guided walking books and maps to give you more ideas. Also visit our walking page.

To uncover the Dorset wildlife why not join a Badger watch, or take a Llama for a walk through the glorious countryside? Visit Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium or Abbotsbury Swannery, Dorset’s world famous sanctuary, home to over 600 free flying swans. At Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park you can follow a mile long nature trail teeming with wildlife. Here children can help feed unusual breeds of animals too. For more details visit our attractions pages.

Dorset Coast
In December 2001, 95 miles of East Devon and Dorset coastline was awarded World Heritage Site status, ranking it alongside the Grand Canyon and Great Barrier Reef as one of the natural wonders of the world. The full 25 miles of West Dorset coastline is included in this fantastic award and is made up entirely of rocks formed during the Jurassic Period - some 190 million years ago! Either side of West Dorset the rocks were formed in the Triassic and Cretaceous periods.

This is fossil hunting country! Here you can find Ammonites, Belemnites and even bones from Ichthyosaurs, (extinct marine reptiles), which are frequently uncovered here. The beaches around Charmouth and Lyme Regis are the best places to hunt for fossils.

Hunting for fossils is especially good in the winter months. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, together with the Philpot Museum and Dinosaurland in Lyme Regis, give advice and run regular guided fossil collecting walks. This is the best and safest way to get started. Click on the downloads to the right for safety information at West Dorset's beaches and to find out more information about exciting coast protection works taking place in Lyme Regis.

Why not explore the Jurassic Coast in a unique way - Deep Seeker Charters offer tailor made charters to suit every need including Jurassic Coast educational trips, scenic cruises and open days during the summer
