It is easy to imagine The Netherlands as just Amsterdam, as that seems to be everyone's city break when they come to Holland. The nation's capital city is one of the most visually stunning in the world, where you can delve through centuries of history onboard a canal boat or explore the array of excellent museums. The nightlife in Amsterdam is legendary, the red light district comes alive at night with clubs and bars and entertainment of every nature. As far as food is concerned, there are a variety of excellent restaurants that come very reasonably priced across the country.

Holland is far more than just its capital, with a string of impressive cities including Arnhem and Rotterdam. Rotterdam is one of Europe's biggest ports, there is plenty to do at night and the city is the perfect quieter cousin to Amsterdam. It is easy to get a ferry to Rotterdam for a short break.,

The rest of the country, despite its accessibility, is comparatively untouched by tourism. The west of the Netherlands is the most populated and historically interesting region, home to a group of towns known collectively as the Randstad (literally "rim towns"). It's a good idea to leave Amsterdam for a while and investigate places like Haarlem and Delft with their old canal-girded centres or The Hague (Den Haag) the stately home of the Dutch government with its fine museums and easy access to the North Sea coast. Holland is a great place for a short break, city break or a self drive ferry holiday.
