It all began in the town of Seeshaupt, Germany (near Munich) in 1945. Dr Klaus Maetens injured his foot during a skiing accident. To help him recover from his accident Dr Martens designed a shoe with an air cushioned sole.By 1959 Dr Marten was producing the first work boot with the new air cushioned sole.
