Possibly Europe's best preserved medieval city and its prettiest, Brugges was a
thriving port in days past. The prosperity of its merchants is evident everywhere:
in handsome gabled houses, ornate guild-halls and majestic churches. From the central
Belfry, 366 steps high and offering revealing views of narrow cobbled streets,
peaceful canals and panoramas beyond all within an easy stroll. Travel its picturesque
canals to experience the city's remarkable peace and calm. Bump over cobbles in a
horse-drawn carriage. Then retrace your steps to savour the tiny lace parlours,
chocolate boutiques and old curiosity shops of a city aptly dubbed the 'Venice of the
North'. Brugges was the 2002 "Cultural Capital of Europe" and still a great place for a
romantic city break.
