Package Holidays - Get the Packing Right

A few tips we learned on our recent trip to the Hotel Orquidea in Gran Canaria

When jetting off on your overseas holiday, make sure you get your packing right. It may seem like a simple task when you go for a week in the sun, but get it wrong and you could end up wearing the same t-shirts for the entire duration of your holiday.

Know your limits

It's important to know the limits your holiday organizer puts on what you can carry. For example, on a recent family jaunt to the island of Gran Canaria, we could carry a maximum of 80 kgs for a family of four. However the important thing here is, the maximum any bag could carry is 20kgs.

This is important to know, you may, quite logically, think that it's a good idea to pack most things in a couple of cases, so your 6 year-old doesn't get left with a carrying case weighing more than they do: be careful, spread your load.

Mix the bags up a bit

I've got to admit, I don't do much of the packing myself; my wife, and mother of our children tends to sort this out. Although I did take the Mick when she said she would pack the bags and put some clothes for each of us in different bags. "What's the point in doing that?" I said, rather naively. "We are off for a week in the Canary Islands, not a month in Australia". Baggage can't get lost on route to a package holiday in the Canary Islands, can it?

As we got on the coach to take us to the hotel Orquidea, we were held up because one family hadn't turned up. And why hadn't they turned up? Because they were still looking for one of their suitcases. So there you go, suitcases can go missing, even on the shortest of journeys.

The moral of this story, mix up those cases, so if one bag does get lost, at least you'll have a spare pair of swimming shorts to wear.
