Review of Aqualand in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

A day out at Aqualand in Gran Canaria

If you're off to Gran Canaria with the family, how about a trip to Aqualand in Maspolomas? This is one of the largest water parks in the Canary Islands, and has something suitable for all ages.

How to get to Aqualand

Our family decided to spend a day at Aqualand during our recent holiday to Gran Canaria. There are four of us; mum and and, 6 year-old daughter and 10 year-old son - so we were hoping for something for everyone. We stayed at the the Hotel Orquidea in Behia Feliz - about 15 minutes from Aqualand. So the first decision we had to make was how to get there. As far as we could make out, we had three choices; take the package offered by Thomson, our tour operator. Get a bus, or get a taxi.

The package offered by Thomson would cost another 44 euros on top of the ticket price. This seemed a bit steep, so we ditched this straight away. We had a little chat with the rep, who said that the cost of a bus for the four of us would be about the same price as a taxi fair. So taxi it was. The taxi cost us 10 euros, including a tip, and was definitely the easiest option.

Aqualand tickets

Aqualand won't give you the cheapest day out you've ever had, at 25 euros per adult And 18 euros per child - plus the taxi to and from the place, you'll get through at least 100 Euros. Never mind, we're on holiday!

The Aqualand experience

Having children, we had to go on holiday during the school holidays; and so thought Aqualand would be heaving. So it was quite a pleasant surprise to discover that on our arrival at 9:45am, there were only a handful of people waiting to get in. Although it was the Whitsun holidays, so maybe not the busiest season.

When we got into the park, we had to get a locker to put all our gear in. This cost another 4 euros (plus 2 euro deposit). So off to the slides. There are several slides to go on - plenty to keep us all busy from 10am to 4:30pm (which is when the park closed). You have to be taller then 120cm for some of the bigger rides, and after a quick go myself, also decided that 39 was to old too!

The favourite slides for us were the ones which involved going down on a rubber ring, of which there were four. The lazy river was also a hit with everybody, and also served as a handy break after having to keep climbing to the top of the slides.

Conclusion

This is the only water park we've been to, so can't compare it against anything else; however we had a fantastic time, and would do it all again. There weren't many people at the water park, which meant most of the slides didn't have a queue, and even the most popular slide (the "Tornado") only had a queue of a couple of minutes. Aqualand is like a little oasis in the sun drenched hills. If you're staying in Gran Canaria, and looking for some water based activity, it's well worth spending a day here.
