All Inclusive Package Holidays - Are They Worth While

Self catering, half board, all inclusive- which type of package holiday should you go for? This was the question we had to ask ourselves on a recent holiday to Gran Canaria. In the end it was decided that "all inclusive" was the way to go. Our family holiday consisted of mum and dad, our 6 year-old daughter, and 10 year-old son.

Why go all inclusive

We decided to go all inclusive because it would go some way to stop the children puttering. As anyone with children knows, the young 'uns have got a high capacity of complaining. We thought that one of them complaining every 5 minutes that hey were either hungry or thirsty, would grate after a while. So we went all inclusive, so we could just say "fine, nip over and get yourself an ice-cream/coke/water/biscuit, and bring one back for your old parents too".

Was it worth it

Our plan turned out to be a resounding success! We went to the Hotel Orquidea in Behia Feliz, Gran Canaria, and it was everything we hoped it would be. And true to form, within 15 minutes of breakfast finishing, the nippers were complaining of being hungry. But this was OK, because the pool side snack bar was open all day, so they could go and help themselves.

There's more to all inclusive than this though. All the drink and food for the whole family is free - although the booze is locally produced, so don't expect to neck a few Bombay Sapphires of an evening.

Should I go All Inclusive

If you've got a young family, and meal times can be a bit of a chore - I'd highly recommend this type of holiday. The hotel we stayed at, the Hotel Orquidea, had a buffet style breakfast/dinner/tea arrangement - so everybody can choose what they want. Fancy sausages with chocolate sauce for breakfast (no, me neither. But our 10 year-old did) - no problem.

If, however, you'd like to take in a leisurely meal at a different restaurant every night, you may well not get the full benefit of an all inclusive package.

If you think an all-inclusive holiday is for you, have a little look at the Hotel Orquidea on Gran Canaria. This is where we spent our family holiday, and we may well go back there.
